How to Prepare Your Home for Roof Replacement

Once you have arranged a roof replacement, preparation is about making the property ready for the agreed work—not deciding whether the roof needs replacing. Start by confirming where the contractor needs access, then organize vehicles, outdoor belongings and household routines around that plan.

Separate what you can arrange yourself from what needs the roofer’s direction. You can plan pet care and adjust your work-from-home arrangements, but the contractor should identify the work area, delivery locations and any access restrictions before you move belongings.

Note These are general preparation suggestions, not a description of Twin Roofing’s operating procedures. Confirm the arrangements for your project directly with your roofer. Stay off the roof and outside the active work area; leave roofing components and work equipment to the contractor.

Start with the agreed scope and a clear contact plan

Keep the accepted proposal available and ask whether any preparation responsibilities remain unresolved. If a task is not clear—such as moving an outdoor item or providing access to a particular space—confirm who will handle it rather than assuming it is included.

Identify your project contact and the preferred way to reach them before work begins. Share the contact information for the household member who can answer access questions and discuss proposed changes. If that person will be away, arrange how they can be reached and clarify who is authorized to make decisions.

Confirm access, deliveries and parking before clearing space

Ask the roofer to identify where materials, equipment and any debris container will be placed. Discuss the driveway, garage access, gates and pathways together: a location that works for a delivery may interfere with how your household normally enters or leaves.

  • Confirm which entrances and gates the crew needs and whether access to any interior space is required.
  • Ask where household vehicles should be parked and when the agreed delivery or work area needs to be clear.
  • Explain any shared driveway, limited parking, gate-lock or delivery-access constraints.
  • Agree on a household entry route that stays outside the designated work area.

Discuss outdoor belongings and nearby interior items

Point out patio furniture, grills, planters, toys and other belongings near the planned work area. Ask which items you should move and where they can go without obstructing crew access. Flag anything heavy, fixed in place or difficult to relocate rather than attempting an unsafe move.

Also identify landscaping and property features you want the roofer to consider when planning protection. Ask what protection is proposed, who is responsible for it and whether any areas need additional discussion. Do not assume that a particular covering or protective measure is included.

If interior spaces could be affected by the agreed work, identify stored or fragile belongings in or near those spaces and discuss them with the roofer. Ask whether anything should be moved or protected, who would handle it and when it should happen before any access restrictions begin. Do not assume interior access or particular protective measures are required or included, and do not enter an active work area to retrieve or move items.

Plan household routines around the work area

Ask what noise and access disruption to expect so you can decide whether staying home fits your household’s needs. If you work remotely, consider whether calls or concentration-sensitive tasks should happen elsewhere. Discuss any needs that affect how someone can enter, leave or remain comfortable at home.

Arrange supervision for children and a secure place for pets away from the work area. Tell household members and expected visitors which entrances and outdoor spaces are off limits. If a pet normally uses the yard, confirm an alternative route or care arrangement rather than relying on access through the crew’s workspace.

Agree on communication when plans change

Ask how the roofer will communicate a changed start plan, weather interruption or revised access restriction. Clarify whether you should wait for confirmation before moving vehicles or changing household arrangements. A planned start should not be treated as an unconditional completion commitment.

Discuss how unexpected findings will be explained and how any proposed change to the agreed scope will be documented and authorized. Keep your project contact reachable so questions can be addressed without relying on messages passed through different household members.

Arrange the completion handoff

Before work begins, ask how completion will be communicated and whether a walkthrough or another form of handoff is planned. Clarify what cleanup is included, how to report a concern and when vehicles, belongings and normal outdoor activities can return to the affected areas.

Ask which project documents you should receive, including any applicable product information, warranty documents or care guidance. Confirm whether equipment removal, material pickup or another outstanding task could leave access restrictions in place after the roofing work ends.

Your reusable homeowner preparation checklist

Organize yourself

  • Keep the accepted proposal and project contact information accessible.
  • Identify household access needs, expected visitors and parking constraints.
  • Arrange children’s supervision, pet care and an alternative workspace if needed.
  • Move vehicles and manageable belongings according to the confirmed placement plan.
  • Share the agreed work-area boundaries and entry route with your household.

Confirm with the roofer

  • Who is our project contact, and how will the start plan be confirmed?
  • Where will deliveries, equipment and debris containers go, and what access must remain clear?
  • Which belongings should we move, and what protection or interior preparation do you recommend?
  • How will weather interruptions, schedule changes and unexpected findings be communicated?
  • What cleanup and documents are included, and how will we know the affected areas are ready for normal use?

A pre-start note you can send

Adapt this message to your household and send it through the communication channel agreed with your roofer:

Note Before work begins, please confirm our project contact, required access, parking plan and locations for materials and debris containers. Let us know which outdoor belongings to move and any recommended interior preparation. We would also like to confirm how our household access needs will be handled, how weather or schedule changes will be communicated, and what to expect for cleanup, documents and the final handoff.
